Our Actuarial Internship Program is more than a traditional internship. It's an immersive experience designed to help you bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world of reinsurance.

Over the course of the summer, you'll:

  • Work on business-critical projects with measurable impact
  • Partner with experienced actuaries and actuarial associates
  • Learn directly from industry leaders and senior executives
  • Collaborate with fellow interns on a capstone project
  • Gain exposure to multiple actuarial functions across the organization
  • Build the technical and professional skills that will help accelerate your actuarial career

You will be expected to relocate to the greater New York area, to meet our hybrid working model of at least 3 days a week in office. This provides a great opportunity to network, develop soft skills and become immersed within the greater Munich Re culture; including engaging with your team while in-office for face-to-face meetings, sharing meaningful moments, and allocating time to connect with your Manager. As there have been many changes throughout the pandemic/post pandemic, this policy is subject to change, based on business requirements.

Position Overview

Throughout your Summer internship, you will work closely with other Actuarial Associates and Actuaries within their respective departments, as well as with other key individuals across the organization. Departmental placements will be made closer to your start date based on internal business needs. In addition to the responsibilities in your assigned department, you will be exposed to all other actuarial departments in the firm through an immersive internship program which culminates in a capstone project that you will work on with other Summer interns.

Placement opportunities involve numerous departments, some of which are listed below:

  • Biometric Research

As part of the Biometric Research team, you’ll:

    • Support experience studies across Life, Longevity, and Long-Term Care business lines
    • Analyze mortality and persistency trends affecting insurers and consumers
    • Explore demographic and population-level insights shaping the future of the industry
    • Work with large datasets to identify emerging patterns and risks
    • Contribute to quote reviews and research initiatives that support client solutions

  • Corporate Actuarial

As part of the Corporate Actuarial team, you’ll:

    • Help develop assumptions used in policy liability calculations
    • Support financial reporting for US Life & Health business
    • Build and maintain complex actuarial models
    • Analyze regulatory developments and their business implications
    • Collaborate across functions to solve complex business challenges

  • Pricing (Individual Life Flow, Inforce & M&A, Alternative Solutions, Group, Living Benefits and Financial Reinsurance):

As part of the Pricing team, you’ll:

    • Evaluate profitability of new and existing business opportunities
    • Analyze the impact of assumptions, product design, and market trends
    • Develop client-focused solutions and growth strategies
    • Build pricing and projection models
    • Conduct market research and support reinsurance quotations
    • Contribute to high-impact transactions and innovative product solutions

Qualifications

We are looking for well-rounded individuals who are technically astute, have strong communication skills, and demonstrate the ability to build positive relationships with internal clients. We are seeking energetic and collaborative professionals who are excited to join our winning team and show promise of becoming a future leader in the reinsurance space.

Specifically, we’re looking for the following qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Actuarial Science, Math, Statistics, Risk Management, or equivalent program – in healthy academic standing;
  • Successful completion of one SOA exam (with two or more preferred);
  • Excellent communication skills – spoken & written, formal/informal presentation;
  • Proven capability to multi-task and successfully self-manage multiple priorities and projects of various significance;
  • Exhibits solid organizational skills and rigorous attention to detail/accuracy in a fast-paced environment;
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities – clear-thinking, curiosity, integrity, and drive;
  • Proficient Microsoft Excel skills;
  • Preference for candidates who have relevant work experience (in actuarial, insurance, or financial services desired).

This role will be based in New York, NY. The base range for this internship will be $30 - $35 per hour. The hourly estimate displayed represents the typical hourly range for candidates hired in this position in New York. Factors that may be used to determine your actual rate will include your specific skills, level of schooling, exams, and how many years of experience.
