Meet Michael

Helping clients make the risks they encounter more manageable

Michael works as a Facultative Underwriter for Munich Re Germany at our Munich office.

Michael joined Munich Re as a vocational trainee. From 2007 onwards, he completed a dual study programme in business administration and continued his training even after successfully graduating. Today, he works for Munich Re in the Facultative Property division and deals with complex industrial risks. He advises internationally active insurers all over the world - his focus is on North America. Michael deals with single transactions that have individually set premiums. He is often under time pressure when negotiating the contracts, which can be worth millions.

Michael's experience and in-depth industry knowledge help him find innovative solutions, whether it is cyber risks or parametric covers, risks from natural hazards or business interruption. If necessary, he can also draw on the specialist knowledge of Munich Re units such as Marine, Energy and Engineering.

What does a Facultative Underwriter do at Munich Re?

"Contrary to what most people would assume, my involvement doesn’t stop with the signed contract. I cultivate client relationships - not least because his underwriting can build a bridge to treaty commitments. In addition, I support our claims managers in adjusting claims and help product innovation by sharing feedback. A significant part of my daily work goes to Nat Cat assessment and understanding the trends that affect the risk landscapes, in which our clients operate."

What are your favourite projects?

"My favourite projects change the way I perceive the world, for example, those involving household-name brands. We see and use their products every day. Underwriting allows me to glimpse the world behind a product. It comes with fascinating insights into companies’ global operations."

What do you enjoy about your work?

"I look at risks from all angles – technical, legal, and social. The challenge inspires me, not just intellectually. Becoming a volunteer firefighter has led me to appreciate more deeply how we, as underwriters, help people manage – and even avoid – very real perils. We make an impact, and that’s gratifying."
