Group Head of Fine Art & Specie

To define and deliver the Underwriting Strategy for the Global FAS product, working closely with the London and regional teams to support the execution of this strategy whilst ensuring an inclusive culture is maintained at all times

Responsibilities:

  • To support, challenge and lead the FAS underwriting teams in delivering on the short term plans and longer term ambitions of the product, in close collaboration with the Claims, Pricing and all key non-underwriting functions. The role has P&L responsibility.
  • Maintain regular, structured and data led meetings with the teams to monitor and manage performance against plan, ensure the business complies with all sanctions & compliance requirements, aligns with the agreed risk appetite for the product and is being underwritten in a way that is price adequate at the portfolio level
  • Act as a point of referral for all risks that present an enhanced risk to the business, either due to size of limit, length of policy period, underlying risk profile and/ or any other metric that warrants heightened attention
  • Be an active and empowered voice within the Marine, Engineering and Special Risks leadership team and live the values of the broader Munich Re Specialty Global Markets business
  • Be a collaborative leader across all entities within Munich Re and ensure client focus is prioritised at all times
  • Represent the global product to the multiple stakeholders contributing to our business, both internally and externally. This includes clients, coverholders and brokers as well as treaty reinsurers, Lloyd’s and the internal senior management of GSI, Munich Re Specialty and Munich Re
  • Potential requirement to be a representative on one (or more) of the Boards connected to the Munich Re Specialty Global Markets business
  • Whilst maintaining close attention to the Munich Re expense policy, be a visible leader in offices writing, or considering to write, FAS
  • Work closely with the Exposure Management and the Ceded Reinsurance teams with a focus on the aggregates for the product, the Lloyd’s and Munich RDS outputs and ensure the Treaty Reinsurance programme remains appropriate
  • Encourage the FAS underwriters to operate in a “paper agnostic” manner and support both our Lloyd’s and non-Lloyd’s platforms where appropriate, notably in our Commercial expansion across Europe and APAC
  • Help drive forward good Conduct for the business to deliver the best outcomes for customers/ policyholders.
  • Understand all appropriate lines of escalation and the responsibilities of the Product Conduct Risk Strategy Group (PCRSG), Underwriting & Claims Sub Committee (UCSC), ExCo and Board for Conduct Risk.

Knowledge and Skills

Advanced level knowledge and understanding of:

  • Fine Art & Specie Insurance  

Intermediate level knowledge and understanding of:

  • Insurance Underwriting Principles
  • Legal Principles in Insurance
  • FCA and Lloyd’s rules and regulations including contract certainty issues
  • All company specific procedures that relate to the role and role of those employees that you are supervising
  • Global insurance markets
  • Demonstrate clear understanding of the roles of colleagues and their relationships to the structure and business plans of the Firm;
  • Develop and maintain market awareness;
  • Willingness to continue to develop knowledge of products, underwriting and related issues through formal and informal learning, both internally and externally to the firm.
