The Chief Compliance Officer, North America is part of the global compliance senior leadership team led by the Head of Global Compliance at Munich Re Munich. Apart from its prescribed responsibilities as Solo Compliance Function in the legal view, which remain unaffected, the Chief Compliance Officer, North America provides oversight to the Group Compliance Function of North American compliance activities by ensuring that the group-wide Compliance Management System (CMS) has been deployed by all Solo Compliance Functions in an effective, efficient and harmonized way within North America meeting both group-wide requirements as well as local requirements and regulatory expectations.

The role will report directly to the MRAS Chief Legal Officer and have a matrixed reporting relationship to the Head of GCL 1.1 (Global Compliance).

Key Responsibilities  

  • Work closely with the Global Compliance organization (GCL1.1) to ensure alignment with group-wide CMS designs and Global Compliance initiatives, sharing knowledge and expertise to drive compliance excellence. Areas of focus include potential financial crime, local laws and regulations governing insurance and related operations, antitrust and unfair competition law and related corporate norms, directives, and other guidance.
  • Directly manage and support Corporate Compliance staff within the MRAS Legal & Compliance department.
  • Lead the drafting and publication of and education of the business about U.S.- and Canada-specific addenda to group organizational norms, directives, and/or other guidance, as needed to account for and comply with relevant local laws and regulations. Monitor implementation for compliance. Regularly review and, if needed, revise local addenda to ensure they remain relevant and current.
  • Through matrixed reporting relationships, oversee and align with Solo Compliance Functions outside MRAS Legal & Compliance in North America to assess local legal and regulatory requirements, including changes, and to enhance group-wide compliance programs, policies, and processes proportionately with local particularities, where necessary.
  • Establish a target operating model and a related regional compliance plan for North America (“NACHO 2.0”) that delivers effective management of local compliance tasks, creates synergies and appropriate standardization across, and fosters collaboration and mutual assistance among local compliance functions.
  • Build and maintain a strong partnership and closely collaborate with the MRAS CLO, their direct reports, and the other North American entities’ legal staff to coordinate related compliance and legal advice and activities.
  • Collaborate with local CEOs/business heads and their respective Chief Compliance Officers, General Counsels or other compliance personnel and/or lead lawyers as appropriate to drive a compliance culture and allocate resources, evaluate and determine staffing needs, and establish a compliance budget that supports the entity's objectives.

Skills and Qualifications

  • At least 10 years proven professional experience in compliance roles with multinational property and casualty insurance or reinsurance organizations with significant U.S. operations. Familiarity with both commercial and personal lines preferred. Familiarity with life and health insurance a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state local regulatory frameworks relevant for various businesses within the RI-Group of Munich Re. Familiarity with Canadian federal and provincial legal and regulatory frameworks a plus.
  • Proficiency with Archer regulatory and compliance management software and Munich Re’s other CMS components.
  • Demonstrated experience with sanctions screening and related reporting.
  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to following, championing, and enforcing corporate values, norms, and directives.
  • Executive-level judgment and discretion. Excellent leadership and communication skills, including ability to effectively explain complex compliance issues in plain language to business leaders and employees.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively within a global organization, across multiple dimensions – geographical, functional, divisional and entity.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

The Company is open to considering candidates in numerous locations, including Princeton (NJ), Amelia (OH), and Hartford (CT). The salary range posted below reflects market variations across various locations. The offer will be adjusted per geography.

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $277,600 - $407,100, plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay.  In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO). 

The salary estimate is adjusted to reflect the varying market conditions across different locations, with the with the higher end being more aligned with the Princeton, NJ job market.  Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
