During my co-op term with Munich Re, I worked alongside a talented actuarial team that encouraged curiosity and supported my development. The foundation built during my co-op played a key role in helping me build connections, advance through my exams, and ultimately grow my career at Munich Re.

FAQ

What are the key differences between working in reinsurance versus primary insurance?

Working in reinsurance involves helping insurance companies manage their risk (we insure the insurers), whereas working in primary insurance helps people and businesses acquire insurance. A career in reinsurance offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of big-picture risk strategy, advanced data analysis, and long-term client partnerships—where your insights directly shape the global insurance landscape.

What strategies can I use to stand out as a qualified candidate without traditional job experience?

1/ Leverage transferable skills: Ensuring your resume and interview answers highlight the transferable skills (interpersonal and technical) that you have gained from coursework, projects, volunteering, and extracurricular activities can help you ace the interview and stand out as top talent.

2/ Upskill with certifications and courses: With a variety of online resources available to the average student, taking advantage of industry-relevant courses and certifications (LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Google certifications) can help grow the technical skills required to succeed in the role.

3 / Network intentionally: there are a multitude of career fairs and information sessions that happen year-round on campus. A combination of attending on-campus employer events, information sessions, conferences, and reaching out to the Campus team with personalized messages can help you grow your network and become familiar with upcoming Co-op opportunities.

4/ Student clubs: Participating in special interest/academic clubs and case competitions is a great way to develop leadership skills, while learning and engaging with peer groups.

What does a successful candidate look like for co-op roles at Munich Re?

At Munich Re, there’s no one-size-fits-all definition of a successful candidate. Success comes from a unique combination of strong technical expertise, clear and effective communication, and a mindset rooted in continuous learning. We believe your individuality isn’t just welcomed—it’s a key part of the value you bring.

How do I prepare for my one-way interview (we use Sparkhire)?

Set up your space: ensuring the space around you is well-lit, quiet, and your microphone, camera, and internet connection are working.
Bringing your best self: dressing professionally as if you are attending an in-person interview, maintaining eye contact with the camera, and communicating the answers to the questions in a concise and engaging manner.

Practice, practice, practice: our questions are not meant to trick you. Our one-way interview process is for the Campus team to get to know you and your interest in joining our team. Practicing common interview questions can help relieve interview anxiety and memorize the key points you want to get across with each question.

How does Munich Re support early talent in their career growth?

Students not only gain valuable hands-on experience working alongside industry leaders but are also strongly encouraged to engage in corporate social events, schedule coffee chats, and participate in Campus activities to expand their professional network. Those who demonstrate excellence during their work term at Munich Re are often considered for return intern roles and potential full-time positions upon graduation.
