Senior Renewable Energy Underwriter, Spain

Munich Re Specialty was formed as a stand-alone division in 2023, and brings together the wider Munich Re group’s primary specialty business units. Complementing an already strong presence in the UK and the US, Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets (MRSGM) has been tasked with executing a wider plan to build a broader European footprint. This work will start in Spain, expanding on Munich Re Specialty’s existing business in the UK, Ireland and Germany.

In order to successfully establish and profitably grow our Renewable Energy business in the Spanish market, we are looking for a Senior Renewable Energy UW, Spain to join our team.

We are searching for an exceptional individual with a proven track-record of growth and profitable underwriting in Renewable Energy Line of Business (LoB) in the Spanish market. Ideally, our successful candidate has experience across both Retail (non-Wholesale) and Wholesale business – having underwritten business regionally in Spain. Knowledge of Lloyd’s of London UW practices would be a benefit. An entrepreneurial spirit is a must, with a high degree of comfort in building a business presence from scratch and preparedness to roll up the sleeves for tasks both big and small.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the underwriting process for Renewable Energy insurance, assessing risks and determining appropriate coverage and pricing.
• Review, analyse, and evaluate Renewable Energy risks, including commercial and industrial properties.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal teams to ensure the seamless delivery of underwriting services.
• Provide expert advice on complex underwriting matters and assist junior underwriters in the development of underwriting skills and expertise.
• Monitor and evaluate policy performance, identifying opportunities for risk mitigation and recommending necessary changes to terms and conditions.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and company guidelines related to Renewable Energy underwriting.
• Stay informed of industry trends, market conditions, and emerging risks to ensure underwriting strategies are aligned with market demands.
• Participate in the development of underwriting policies, guidelines, and pricing models.
• Contribute to business growth by actively identifying opportunities to expand Renewable Energy business in alignment with company objectives.
• Conduct and develop effective relationships with insureds and brokers, to both strengthen existing trading relationships and secure new business that falls within the Underwriting business plan.
• Direct and manage overall technical underwriting for Renewable Energy activities for MRSGM in Spain while assuring that a high level of technical proficiency is achieved in all areas.

Knowledge and Skills

• Deep understanding of Renewable Energy insurance products, risk assessment, pricing, and underwriting guidelines.
• Proven experience underwriting complex Renewable Energy risks, including large commercial and industrial properties.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• In-depth knowledge of exposure and experience rating processes to assess risk and ensure accurate pricing.
• Excellent people skills with the ability to build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to the company’s corporate mission.
• Exceptional negotiation skills to secure favourable terms for both clients and the company.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with the ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
• A proven track record in general business management, including strategic planning, forecasting, and long-term growth.
• Fluency in both Spanish and English.
• Extensive years primary insurance underwriting experience
• University degree and/or relevant professional qualification
